How to Find Your Unique Pole Flow

Whether you’re new to pole or not, it can be challenging to find your own pole flow. Especially if you’ve only ever taken classes and haven’t had the chance to explore on the pole freely.

Every dancer you see typically has their own type of style and as inspiring as they are, it can be difficult when trying to emulate their combos. I always like to find one or two moves from a combo that inspires me, but I’ll put my own twist on it. It not only feels more natural to me that way, but it also lowers any expectations I would have of trying to “look like them” because now I am only trying to look like me.

How I Found My Own Pole Flow

Before owning a home pole, I would religiously go to open studio and just do whatever I wanted that day. It really helped me explore my own body and find what feels the most natural to me. Some studios aren’t offering open studio anymore due to covid, but many do offer studio rentals. You can also find dancers on Instagram who do pole rentals at a reasonable price.

It’s crucial to be able to explore on the pole freely in order to find your flow. Every dancer/instructor that you want to take a class with has figured out their own unique style. It’s what intrigues us to want to learn from them in the first place! You have your own style too as long as you take the time to uncover it.

What works for me:

  • Prioritize freestyling on the pole as often as possible.
  • Mentally clear your mind to just feel the music and let your body do what it naturally wants to. Let the music bring you to a meditative state.
  • Pick one or two moves from a combo you want to recreate and create your own beginning and ending.
  • Always consider variations of a move if you can’t get the one you want. It can look just as beautiful and sometimes even more beautiful for your body type.
  • Move your hands! They add grace and flair.
  • Take your time (unless your flow is fast paced, then do you!)

Perks of Having Your Own Style

Once you find your flow, you can come up with signature moves, climbs, or even transitions. In most of my videos, I use the same intro. I don’t always add it in my videos in order to keep everything under one minute, but it’s there. At first, I felt that it would be boring to have the same start to a combo for most of my videos, but it’s actually helped me stand out and inspire others to emulate it. And if what I’m doing doesn’t inspire anyone, then what am I doing it for?

Another bonus for having my own spin and climb is the fact it helps me get into my flow and out of my mind. It gives me just enough time to just feel the music and allow my body to speak for me, which makes combos that much prettier. You can tell whether a dancer is in sync with the present moment or if they’re thinking about every move they’re going to make before they make it. Looking as present as possible makes everything flow more seamlessly.

Embrace your individuality! You don’t need to look or dance like anyone else to be a pole goddess. The more unique, the better <3 Happy twirling.
